In my regular “go to work” job, I’m a scientist – an epidemiologist, in fact.
Truthfully, I have a hard time imagining a more awesome job. I get to do really fun research, and I get to help other people learn how to do a good job on their research. No labs and test tubes here – I spend my time with:
- my computer, using it for writing, hunting for information online, and running statistics and mathematical models
- other people, in meetings where we plan and work on our research projects
For me, one of the best parts about my job is getting to be involved in research about so many different things all at the same time. Here are some of the projects I’ve worked on lately:
- designing a website to help parents manage their children’s asthma, and then checking to see if it worked
- looking at the impact that TV, video, and computer games have on development and behavior in little kids
- studies that look at how to improve the healthcare that kids get while they’re in the hospital
